Authentic vintage furniture in an 18th-century palazzo

Melusina Apartment is for those who want an apartment with genuine character. You won’t find catalogue furniture here, but original 1950s and 60s pieces — authentic, with a history behind them. The light fittings are period, the furniture is the real thing, not reproductions. The building dates to the 1700s, one of those Venetian palazzi that still has an imposing entrance and an Istrian stone staircase. You understand immediately that this is a different kind of place. The spaces are airy thanks to the high ceilings typical of historic palazzi — 50 square metres where genuine vintage sits alongside modern comforts, including a fully updated bathroom. The apartment is on a quiet calle in Castello, a short walk from Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo. It works well for anyone who values real design over Instagram aesthetics, and wants to live in a space that has its own personality.

In the neighbourhood:
▸ Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo: 2-minute walk
▸ Arsenale and Giardini della Biennale: 15-minute walk
▸ Piazza San Marco: 10-minute walk
▸ Ponte di Rialto: 12 minutes
▸ Vaporetto stop Ospedale: 350 metres
▸ Coop supermarket nearby
▸ Bars, restaurants and traditional bakeries close by
▸ Local greengrocer
▸ Libreria Acqua Alta: 10 minutes
▸ Fondamenta Nuove (vaporetto to the islands): 8 minutes

Vintage character and modern comfort

Melusina Apartment doesn’t require any particular enthusiasm for vintage to be appreciated — everything works, the heating is reliable, the bathroom is new, the kitchen is fully equipped. You simply happen to be living in a space with a distinctive aesthetic, furnished with authentic 1950s and 60s pieces you won’t find anywhere else. Castello is the right sestiere if you want to experience Venice without feeling overwhelmed by tourism: neighbourhood shops are still here, as are the osterie that Venetians actually use. The Biennale is a 15-minute walk, San Marco is 10. The high ceilings of the 18th-century palazzo give that sense of openness that’s hard to come by in the centre. The apartment sleeps up to 4 and works equally well for short or longer stays.

How the apartment is laid out

Melusina Apartment covers 50 square metres on the first floor of an 18th-century palazzo. The building announces itself from the entrance: Istrian stone stairs, high ceilings, the sense of solidity that characterises genuine Venetian palazzi. A private entrance leads to a hallway connecting the different rooms. The living area has a sofa bed for additional guests and the original 1950s and 60s furniture: not reproductions, but pieces that have been here for decades. The light fittings are period, the chairs have that design sensibility that today gets labelled vintage but was simply Italian contemporary at the time.

The kitchen is equipped with a hob, microwave, fridge, toaster and coffee machine, with a dining area alongside. The bedroom has a queen-size double bed and a single, suitable for couples or small families. The bathroom is completely new — vintage aesthetics in the living spaces, modern comforts where they matter. Ceilings are high and open throughout, and the heating works well even in winter.

Why this apartment?

Original 1950s and 60s furniture and light fittings — not reproductions. A space with a genuine aesthetic identity that you won’t find in other rentals

▸ An 18th-century palazzo with an imposing entrance and Istrian stone staircase, with the high, airy ceilings of historic Venetian architecture

Authentic vintage character where it counts, modern comforts where they’re needed: new bathroom, reliable heating, fast WiFi

It means these are not reproductions or vintage-style pieces, but authentic furniture from that period. The light fittings, the chairs, the tables — genuine Italian mid-century design, what was simply contemporary at the time and is now genuinely collectible. If you value real aesthetics over catalogue looks, this apartment has character.

Yes — a historic Venetian building. You can see it from the entrance and the Istrian stone staircase. Ceilings are high in the tradition of Venetian noble palazzi. The kind of building that has held its original structure across the centuries.

No — that’s precisely the point. The bathroom is completely new, so all modern comforts are there. The heating works well, there’s fibre optic internet, the kitchen is properly equipped. The vintage aesthetic is in the living spaces; the modern comforts are where you actually need them.

Very. The Arsenale and the Giardini are a 15-minute walk. A number of our guests are creative professionals — architects, designers — who appreciate staying in a space with a particular aesthetic while visiting the Biennale.

Comfortably 3 to 4. The bedroom has a double and a single bed, and there’s a sofa bed in the living room. Well suited to couples or small families who want to stay somewhere with personality.

What our guests say

"I'm a design enthusiast and when I saw the original 1950s furniture I knew this was the right place. These aren't reproductions — they're real pieces. The period light fittings, the chairs, everything has an aesthetic you simply don't find any more. The 18th-century palazzo with its Istrian stone staircase adds that genuine Venetian touch. Ideal for the Biennale."

"We were looking for something that wasn't the usual anonymous tourist rental, and Melusina Apartment exceeded what we expected. The vintage furniture is authentic, not catalogue reproductions. The bathroom is new so all the modern comforts are there, the heating works well. The position in Castello is right: quiet but close to everything."

"I stayed here for two weeks during a photography project. The apartment has character, which is rare in holiday rentals. The high ceilings of the historic palazzo, the period furniture, the considered aesthetic. Castello is the right neighbourhood if you want the real Venice. Fast WiFi for working, a modern bathroom, everything you need. I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates spaces with personality."
