Quiet, garden views, and a short walk from the Biennale

Ca Melusina is the right apartment for those who want to be in the heart of Venice without giving up peace and quiet. It sits on a little-travelled calle in Castello, one of those streets where Venetians still go about their daily lives. What stands out immediately are the large windows that look onto private gardens — a kind of natural light that’s rare in the historic centre. The apartment has been put together with genuine attention to design. There’s a clear chromatic sensibility running through every room, most visible in the kitchen where coloured zellige tiles create a lively contrast with the neutral tones elsewhere. The layout is open and connected, precisely to let the natural light from the windows move through the space. 60 square metres with room to breathe — well suited to families or small groups who want both space and character. The first floor is low and easily accessible, so manageable with children or luggage.

In the neighbourhood:
▸ Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo: 2-minute walk

▸ Vaporetto stop Ospedale: 350 metres
▸ Coop supermarket nearby
▸ Bars, restaurants and traditional bakeries close by
▸ Local greengrocer

▸ Fondamenta Nuove (vaporetto to the islands): 8 minutes

Considered design with garden views

Ca Melusina suits those who visit Venice at a slower pace and notice when a space has been thought about. Many guests choose this apartment specifically for the design and the furnishings — it’s not the standard anonymous tourist rental, but somewhere with a clear visual intent behind it. The zellige tiles in the kitchen, the deliberate use of colour, the open layout. The position works well for anyone here for the Biennale, and equally for families who need space to move around. Castello is the most authentic sestiere, where neighbourhood shops and locally-frequented osterie are still part of everyday life. San Marco and Rialto are easy to reach, but you come back to a quiet street. The garden views and the natural light are the real added value: looking out onto green rather than walls is something genuinely uncommon in Venice.

How the apartment is laid out

Ca Melusina covers 60 square metres on the first floor of a typical Venetian building. The floor is low, so accessible even with children or luggage. A private entrance leads into a hallway that connects all the rooms. The living area is spacious and light-filled, with a sofa bed that allows for additional guests, and looks out over the private gardens through large windows.

The kitchen is where the chromatic research is most evident: the coloured zellige tiles give it a lively, contemporary feel. It’s fully equipped — hob, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, toaster and coffee machine. There’s a dining area with table and chairs, practical for anyone who wants to cook and eat together. The bedroom has a queen-size double bed and a single bed, a good configuration for families or small groups. The bathroom has a combined bath and shower, bidet, and all the essentials. The layout is open and connected throughout to keep the natural light moving through the space. Ceilings are high in the Venetian tradition, floors are tiled, and the furnishings have been chosen with care.

Why this apartment?

The design has been carefully considered, with a clear chromatic sensibility — most visible in the coloured zellige tiles in the kitchen. This is not a generic tourist apartment

▸ The large windows looking onto private gardens bring in a quality of natural light that’s rare in the historic centre, with an open layout that makes the most of it

▸ The first floor is low and easily accessible — a practical choice for families with children or anyone who’d rather not deal with many stairs

Private gardens. That’s not something you come across often in Venice, particularly in the historic centre. Instead of looking at the walls of neighbouring buildings, you see greenery and trees. It makes a noticeable difference, especially on a longer stay when you want something restful to look at when you open the windows.

Very. The Arsenale and the Giardini della Biennale are a 15-minute walk. It’s one of the better positions if you’re here for the art and want a calm apartment to return to in the evening. A number of our guests are architects and designers who come to Venice specifically for the Biennale.

Yes — the kitchen is equipped like a proper home kitchen. Dishwasher, oven, microwave, everything you need if you want to cook. Particularly useful if you’re travelling with family or staying for several days. The Coop supermarket is nearby.

Up to 5. The bedroom has a double and a single bed, and there’s a sofa bed in the living room. Designed for families or small groups of friends. Cots and travel beds for children are available at no extra cost.

It’s on the first floor, so there is one flight of stairs. That’s not an issue for most people, but if you have mobility difficulties or particularly heavy luggage, we’d suggest one of our ground-floor apartments such as Appartamento Sandro.

Booking through our official website always gets you the best available price and the most flexible cancellation terms. You'll also receive a discount voucher to use on a future stay at any of our Venice apartments.

What our guests say

"We stayed at Ca Melusina for two weeks during the Architecture Biennale. The apartment is exactly right: spacious, light-filled, with a proper kitchen where we cooked most evenings. The garden view is something else for the centre of Venice. Ideal position for walking to the Arsenale and coming back to somewhere quiet in the evening."

"We travelled with our two children and Ca Melusina worked perfectly. Room to move around, a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area where we had breakfast together every morning. The neighbourhood feels real — greengrocer, bakery, supermarket all nearby. The children loved looking out at the gardens. Highly recommended for families."
Anna & Peter, graphic designers
Amsterdam
"I stayed here for a month while working on a photography project about the less-visited side of Venice. The apartment has everything: fast WiFi, space to work, a complete kitchen. The position in Castello is ideal if you want to experience the real city, the one Venetians actually live in. Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo is a two-minute walk, with bars and osterie where you won't find tourists. I'd do it again."
