Original frescoes in a 17th-century palazzo near Campo San Polo

Rialto 5 is for those looking for something genuinely distinctive. This is not a standard apartment — it’s a space with original frescoes on the ceiling and walls, inside a 17th-century palazzo. When you walk in, it’s immediately clear that you’re living inside a piece of Venetian history. 50 square metres arranged in an unusual way: a large open-plan mezzanine space where two sleeping areas have been carved out, giving privacy while keeping the sense of openness that comes with a high, undivided room. Sleeps up to 5. Close to Campo San Polo, in a quiet but central part of San Polo — away from the market noise but within easy reach of everything. The supermarket is around the corner, and there’s a good café nearby. Second floor, so two flights of stairs. Washing machine in the apartment. The frescoes are the real point: not a decorative detail, but a direct encounter with Venetian art that has survived for centuries.

Living beneath original 17th-century frescoes

Rialto 5 is for those who appreciate art and historic architecture. The frescoes on the ceiling and walls are not reproductions — they are the originals, unchanged across centuries. The 17th-century palazzo has the solidity and character that only genuinely historic Venetian buildings carry. The layout is unusual: open and mezzanined, with two sleeping areas arranged intelligently within the space, so everyone has their own corner without the room being broken up by walls. Well suited to families or groups of friends who want to be together but also have some separation. Close to Campo San Polo in a quiet part of San Polo, away from the market but near everything: Rialto is 8 minutes away, San Marco is 10, the vaporetto stop San Silvestro is 5. The Basilica dei Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco are both within easy walking distance. Washing machine in the apartment, useful for longer stays. Second floor — two flights of stairs. When you’re sleeping under original frescoes, the stairs are worth it.

How the apartment is laid out

Rialto 5 covers 50 square metres on the second floor of a 17th-century palazzo in a quiet part of San Polo. A private entrance leads into a distinctive space: a large open-plan mezzanine room with original frescoes on the ceiling and walls. These are not modern decorations — they are genuine frescoes that have been here for centuries. The layout is well thought through: two sleeping areas are arranged within the open space, giving privacy without closing everything off with walls. One area has a double bed; the other accommodates additional guests (configuration to be confirmed).

The kitchen is integrated into the open space and fully equipped with hob, fridge and everything needed for cooking. There’s a dining area with table and chairs. The bathroom has a shower, hairdryer and courtesy kit. The washing machine is in the apartment. The open mezzanine layout gives a sense of volume and light, while still allowing each guest their own space. Ceilings are high in the tradition of 17th-century Venetian palazzi, and the original frescoes are the apartment’s defining feature.

Why this apartment?

Original frescoes on the ceiling and walls of a 17th-century palazzo — not a decorative detail, but a direct encounter with Venetian art and history that has survived across centuries

▸ An open-plan mezzanine space with two sleeping areas: the right choice for those who want the sense of openness that comes with an undivided room, while still having private corners for everyone

A quiet position near Campo San Polo, supermarket around the corner, washing machine in the apartment, and within easy reach of the Frari, San Rocco, Rialto and San Marco

Yes — genuine frescoes on the ceiling and walls, not reproductions or modern decorations. They are the originals from the 17th-century palazzo. If you appreciate art and historic architecture, this apartment is something particular. Living under Venetian frescoes is a rare experience, even in Venice.

It’s a large open-plan mezzanine room. Two sleeping areas are arranged within the space, so you have privacy without walls closing everything off. It works well if you’re travelling with family or friends and want a sense of openness alongside private corners for sleeping. This is not a traditional apartment with separate enclosed bedrooms.

No — like Rialto 4, this apartment is in a quieter part of San Polo, closer to Campo San Polo than to the market. The Ponte di Rialto is an 8-minute walk, the market a little further. If you want to be right at Rialto Mercato, Rialto 1, 2 or 3 would suit you better. If you’d prefer a quiet base with historic frescoes, this is the right choice.

Yes — second floor, two flights of stairs. If stairs are a difficulty or you have very heavy luggage, a ground-floor apartment such as Appartamento Sandro would be more practical. If stairs aren’t an issue and you appreciate historic art, it’s absolutely worth it.

Yes — in the apartment, at no extra charge. Useful for longer stays, for travelling with children, or simply for washing clothes during your stay. One of the few apartments in the historic centre with one included.

What our guests say

"We're architects and when we saw the original frescoes we were genuinely taken aback. These are not modern decorations — they are real 17th-century frescoes. The open mezzanine layout worked perfectly for the five of us: everyone had their own space but we were still together. Campo San Polo 3 minutes away, the Frari and San Rocco right there. A unique experience."

"We stayed for a week with our two children. The frescoes on the ceiling are beautiful — the children were fascinated. The open layout is practical, the washing machine indispensable. A quiet area, supermarket around the corner. The second-floor stairs are the only effort, but when you're living under original frescoes, it's worth it. Recommended for families."

"We were looking for something special in Venice. Rialto 5 is exactly that: a 17th-century palazzo, original frescoes, genuine historic architecture. The mezzanine layout is interesting — very different from standard apartments. Close to Campo San Polo, quiet but central. Fast WiFi for working. If you care about art and history, this apartment is one of a kind."
