The standard version is the three-hour tour: a rushed glass furnace on Murano, a few photos of Burano&#8217;s coloured houses, and back. You return feeling you&#8217;ve seen everything and understood nothing.<\/p><p>This guide suggests the opposite: one full day, given over to the islands, taken at the right pace. Murano, Burano and Torcello aren&#8217;t a theme park to tick off in a morning \u2014 they&#8217;re three very different places, each with its own life, worth the time you give them.<\/p><h3>The three islands, briefly<\/h3><ul><li><strong>Murano <\/strong>is the glass island. Working furnaces, workshops, the sound of master glassmakers at the bench \u2014 but also a small town with its own canals, an ancient basilica, and daily life carrying on beneath the surface.<\/li><li><strong>Burano <\/strong>is the island of colour and lace. The houses painted yellow, red, blue and green weren&#8217;t a marketing idea: it was how fishermen recognised their own home in the fog. Only a handful of people live here now, but it holds the oldest Byzantine mosaics in the lagoon and a silence you won&#8217;t find anywhere else. It&#8217;s the island the tours skip \u2014 which is exactly why it&#8217;s worth it.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Getting to the islands (and where to start)<\/h3><p>The gateway to the northern lagoon is Fondamente Nove, the large landing on the northern edge of Venice. From here the ACTV line 12 connects Murano, Mazzorbo, Torcello and Burano in a single trip, running roughly every half hour. Fondamente Nove to Burano takes about 45 minutes; Murano is much closer, just over ten.<\/p><p>For Murano alone you can also take lines 3, 4.1 and 4.2 from the centre. For Torcello, the simplest way is to get off at Burano and hop on the line 9 shuttle, which links the two islands in a few minutes. Many furnaces still offer glass-blowing demonstrations, and the Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato \u2014 one of the oldest churches in the lagoon, with a remarkable 12th-century mosaic floor \u2014 is usually empty just steps from the tourist flow.<\/p><p>On Burano, timing is everything: before 10am and after 4pm the island is alive and the colours are yours; in between, the groups arrive. Look for the leaning campanile of San Martino and the island&#8217;s centuries-old needle-lace tradition. From Burano, a wooden bridge (the Ponte Longo) leads to Mazzorbo \u2014 orchards, vineyards, silence, and Venissa, a walled vineyard with a restaurant.<\/p><p>Torcello is the oldest and emptiest island. Come for the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, founded in the 7th century, whose Byzantine mosaics \u2014 a vast Last Judgement and a gold-ground Madonna \u2014 are among the most intense images in the whole lagoon. The island takes an hour to walk, but it&#8217;s an hour that justifies the journey.<\/p><h3>Planning the day and when to go<\/h3><p>Starting early from Fondamente Nove: Burano first (colours before the crowds), then Mazzorbo on foot over the Ponte Longo, lunch without hurry, Torcello in the early afternoon, and Murano on the way back, softer and quieter in the low afternoon light. The islands are at their best off-season and early in the day: in winter the northern lagoon is nearly deserted; in summer, avoid the middle hours.<\/p><p>On cost: the single ACTV ticket (\u20ac9.50, valid 75 minutes) isn&#8217;t enough for a day of island-hopping. The 24-hour pass (\u20ac25) is the sensible choice; longer passes run to 48h (\u20ac35), 72h (\u20ac45) and 7 days (\u20ac65). Under-6s travel free.
